This is a rare opportunity to learn the traditional art of Blacksmithing from nationally renowned Auckland based artist and craftsman Chris Moore. Chris has over 15 years experience as a black smith and trained trained with England's top restoration company and is the owner of Artistic Ironwork; one of New Zealand's only companies producing genuinely hand forged metal work.
The purpose of this course is to give an introduction to the craft. Learning some basic blacksmithing techniques, you will spend the weekend making your own tools that are used every day in the blacksmiths shop. The forging skills involved in making these tools are an essential start to the craft and with them you have the base needed to make your own projects at home whether it’s Knives, tools or sculpture.
Bring your own lunch - kitchen facilities are available and Oakura village is a 3 minute drive. Tea and coffee will be provided.
Safety: We will be working with fire and hot steel so don’t wear anything highly flammable such as polar fleece tops. It’s a good idea to wear jeans and essential to wear sturdy leather shoes or boots. Students must also bring their own safety glasses, ear plugs or ear muffs.
